Description
CELTIC, Catuvellauni. Uninscribed. Circa 80-50 BC. AV Stater (17mm, 6.24 g, 2h). Westerham North type. Celticized head of Apollo right / Horse left; block of pellets above; below, crescent above pellet; zigzag pattern in exergue. Bean Type A1 (Atrebates & Regni); Van Arsdell 200-1 and cf. 202-1 (Atrebates & Regni); ABC 2430 and cf. 482 (Atrebates & Regni); SCBC 21. Toned, obverse die wear, heavy scratches on obverse, trace deposits on reverse. VF.

This issue would seemingly belong to Bean’s Type A1 following Mackensen (1974). However, while Bean, Mackensen, and Van Arsdell all attribute both the wreath downward (Van Arsdell 200-1) and upward (Van Arsdell 202-1) types to the Atrebates & Regni, ABC attributes Van Arsdell 200-1 to the Catuvellauni as ABC 2430 while leaving Van Arsdell 202-1 attributed to the Regini as ABC 482.
